Lesser-Grass-Blue-Butterfly

Common name : Lesser grass blue

Scientific name : Zizina otis

Family : Lycaenidae

Native to : South Asia

Interesting fact : Very often mistaken for the common grass blue butterfly this specific butterfly is pale blue with a brownish outline and a silvery shine which makes it look glazed in certain lights.

A wingspan of 23 mm, the lesser grass blue is a small butterfly often found in open sunlit grassy areas. Its diet is comprised of the Desmodium triflorum, which grows like a weed. The butterfly breeds on the legume and pea plants. The female lays the eggs in the bracts of flowers so that it may not easily be visible. Once the eggs hatch, the caterpillars hide themselves in the bracts and leaves of their host plant.
