Life at Panchavati

Rama and Seeta, with Lakshmana, had lived in the Dandaka Forest for about ten years. There, they met Sage Agastya who was the first to reach Mount Vindhaya. Sage Agastya advised Rama to go to Panchavati across river Godavari.
Upon reaching Panchavati, they met a huge vulture sitting on a tree along the way. It was Jatayu, late king Dasharatha’s old friend. Wishing him, Rama introduced himself, Seeta and Lakshamana to him. Jatayu assured them that they would not face any trouble while living at Panchavati. He added that he would keep watch on Seeta when they were out hunting.

Rama, Lakshamana and Seeta were all delighted to reach Panchavati. Panchavati, on the banks of the Godavari, was indeed a beautiful place. It was surrounded by trees and flowers, with waterfalls and a river close by. Birds chirped and danced around them in the trees. Even the animals around seemed gentle. Fruits and roots were in abundance there. Lakshmana made a cosy mud hut with a thatched roof for Rama and Seeta. Rama was very happy with the workmanship of Lakshamana and touched by Lakshmana’s devotion and care.
