A Light Pillar is an optical phenomenon seen in the atmosphere in the form of a vertical band of light which appears to extend above or below a light source. This is caused by the multiple reflection of light from numerous tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere or clouds. It is seen mostly in cold, arctic regions. Those caused by the Sun are called Solar pillars and are usually seen when the Sun is near the horizon. Light Pillars can also occur due to the presence of artificial lights. They reflect the source light and so take on the colour of the light source.
