It is also often referred to as the Pharos of Alexandria; it was a lighthouse built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom. The Lighthouse was built in Pharos, Alexandria, Egypt, between 280 and 247 BC.
Why it is special: Considered one of the tallest man-made structures in the world for many centuries, the Lighthouse is one of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World. However, between 946 AD and 1323 AD, the Lighthouse was badly damaged due to earthquakes and was abandoned. In 1480, the site and the last remaining stones of the Lighthouse were used for building the Citadel of Qaitbay. Presently, the government in Egypt is planning to create an underwater museum after some French archaeologists had discovered remains of the Lighthouse on the floorbed of Alexandria’s eastern harbour.
