Lion of Waterloo

The Lion’s Mound, popularly known as the Lion of Waterloo, was constructed on the battlefield of Waterloo, Netherlands, between 1820-1826. A symbol of Allied victory, the lion of Waterloo sits atop a huge hill that was built by taking earth from many parts of the battlefield. 43 metres in height, the hill stands as the base for the statue of a cast iron lion, 4.5 metres in height standing on a stone-block pedestal. 226 steps lead up to the top of the hill.

Amazing Fact: Legend says that when the Duke of Wellington visited the monument, he exclaimed in surprise, “They have altered my field of battle!”
