Little Magic

For some reason that no one knew, everyone called Grace ‘Magic’! She was a helpful little girl. That day she had to study for a geography test, but there was other work to be done.
Her mother wanted her to look after her little brother, Charlie, because she was busy. So, she sat with him singing all his favourite songs. Her geography book lay open on the table but she could only glance at it once in a while.
When mother was back, she took Charlie away and Grace settled down to study. But in a while her mother called again, “magic, the old washerwoman in the lane is carrying a very heavy bucket from the well. Would you please go and help her?”
Magic ran out immediately to help the old woman. By the time she got home, it was too dark in the cottage, so she had her supper and had to go to bed. She put her geography book under her pillow and hoped that it would all be in her brain by morning. Her friends had told her that putting a book under the pillow helped!

Suddenly, she felt the book wriggling and Koala bear came to her. It was from Canberra in Australia and told her all about the city! A cock crowed and came from Brussels to tell her that the tramway along the Belgian coast was the longest tramway in the world.
Soon Magic was galloping across Canada on a horse that told her all about Native American tribes that had lived there. Animals came from all parts of the world and told her about their lands. Magic was not sure if she was awake or dreaming!
Suddenly the animals vanished and she was floating through the air with Charlie who was all grown-up. They flew over mountains and forests and deserts and Charlie said, “One day, you’ll be a rich and famous explorer, Magic!”
Magic woke up feeling that she had a great dream, but she couldn’t remember much. It was time for school so she got dressed and, taking her book, she ran down to have her breakfast. She quickly pored over the geography book and was surprised that she had learnt everything!

Just then, the old washerwoman went past the window. Looking in she wished Magic and said, “May your dreams come true, Magic!”
And lo and behold! Magic had the highest marks in her geography test.
