Living with the Dead

Living-with-the-Dead

The Torajan are an ethnic group, practising unique burial rituals living in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Do you know: The Torajan create an effigy of the departed and place it in the mouth of the cave where the deceased is placed, looking outward.

For the Torajan people, funerals are an important aspect of their life. Until the family of the deceased does not collect sufficient funds for the funeral festivities, the family wraps the deceased in clothes and places the body under the family home. For the funeral, buffaloes are usually sacrificed and the body of the deceased is placed in a cave.
