There was uproar among the hens. Louis, the smallest of the chicks, was missing. “Soon it will be dark!” wept Flora, Louis’ mother, “My poor baby! I wonder where he is!” All the creatures had searched for Louis but he was nowhere to be found. “Do you think he went to the pond with the ducklings?” whispered Hailey, the sheep. Flora heard the whisper and howled even more loudly. “My baby could be drowned!” she wept. No one knew what to do. Suddenly, they heard Cora, the cat, mewing. Flora’s howls grew louder. “Oh, dear! That cat must have eaten up poor Louis!” “Do shut up, Flora!” growled Merrick, the sheepdog, “Let me know the cat.” He went off to find out why Cora was mewing. In a while, he returned with Cora. In her mouth was a small bundle! Little Louis was safe! She had found him under a bush and brought him back from home!
