Prince James was in trouble. “Where were you yesterday, James?” asked the king, “Your master says you didn’t attend school.” “It was the squirrels, father,” explained James. “You watched the squirrels. Two days ago, you went off to look at the birds’ nests. Before that, it was the turtle you left in the stream. When are you going to study?” “I like to study about Nature, father,” replied James. “That’s fine!” said the king, “But even if you want to study Nature when you’re grown up, it will be sensible to finish school! How would you like it if one arm was fat or one ear bigger than another?” “I won’t like it, but why do you ask?” replied the prince. “If you don’t learn a little bit about everything before you begin to make one special study, then it will be like having one big ear!” “I understand now!” smiled James, “I’ll go to school!”
