In the 17th century, King Charles II ascended to the throne in Scotland and refused the Covenanters the right to freely practise their religion. Sir George Mackenzie, Lord Advocate appointed by the king, carried out the most bloody religious persecutions against the rebel Presbyterian Covenanters. The rebels were subject to deportation, inhumane torture, starvation, exposure and beheadings and buried in the Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery. Mackenzie Poltergeist was responsible for the deaths of 18,000 of his countrymen in pursuit of a unified religion. In 1691 when he died, he was ironically buried in a casket contained in the Black Mausoleum tomb, a building located on the Greyfriars Kirkyard.
