Mammoth Cave

Mammoth-Cave

The Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world. The Mammoth Cave is located in the Mammoth Cave National Park that is in Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States. A relation of the Mammoth Cave to humans goes back more than 6,000 years.

Why it is special: The Mammoth Cave has grown from thick Mississippian-aged limestone strata covered by a layer of sandstone. More than 390 miles of passageways have been recorded. But new discoveries and paths are being found each year. In 1941, a National Park of the same name was created to preserve the cave system. It is interesting to note that the name for this cave was based on its sheer size, and not because the fossils of the ‘woolly mammoth’ were found there.
