Mayawati’s electoral journey

Mayawati started her electoral political journey in 1984 General Elections from Kairana, distt. Muzaffarnagar in UP. In the following lines about her electoral career is given for readers’ benefit in brief.

  • In 1984 Lok Sabha elections Mayawati polled 44,445 votes against Akhtar Hasan (Cong.) in Kairana constituency. She contested as an independent candidate.
  • In 1985 a by-election was held for Bijnor (Res.) Lok Sabha constituency. Mayawati as an independent polled 61,564 votes against Meera Kumar of Cong.
  • Again in by-election in 1987 for Haridwar (Res.) Lok Sabha constituency Mayawati as BSP candidate lost narrowly to Ram Singh (Cong.).
  • In 1989 General Elections Mayawati tasted her first electoral victory. She polled 1,73,819 votes in Bijnor Lok Sabha constituency. Her nearest rival Asha Chaudhary polled 1,01,718 votes.
  • 1n 1991 Lok Sabha elections Mayawati polled only 22,384 votes against Ram Singh (BJP) in Haridwar constituency. In the same elections Mayawati also contested from Bijnor constituency and polled 1,59,731 votes but lost to Mangalram Premi (BJP).
  • Again in 1991 by-election for Bulandshahr Lok Sabha constituency were held. Mayawati as BSP candidate polled 67,531 votes lost to Chhatrapal (BJP).
  • In 1992, Mayawati decided to try her luck from Hoshiarpur (Punjab), the home town of her mentor Kanshiram. She polled 90,461 votes and lost to Asha Chaudhary (Cong.).
  • On June 3, 1995, Mayawati became CM of UP for first time and also the first Dalit CM.
  • In 1996, Mayawati elected to Vidhan Sabha from Bilsi (Badaun) assembly constituency. She polled 47,473 votes.
  • In 1996, Mayawati also declared elected from Harora (Saharanpur) assembly constituency securing 84,674 votes.
  • In 1997 became CM of UP for second time in arrangement with BJP to share the post for 6 months term.
  • In 1998 Lok Sabha polls Mayawati elected from Akbarpur constituency securing 2,63,561 votes against Lalta Prasad (SP).
  • In 1999 Lok Sabha polls Mayawati again won from Ambedkar Nagar securing 2,69,762 votes against Ram Pyare Suman (SP).
  • In 2002 UP assembly elections Mayawati got elected from Jehangirganj (Ambedkar Nagar) constituency. She polled 51,004 votes.
  • In hung assembly after a spell of Governor’s rule BSP-BJP again joined hands and Mayawati became CM for the third time.
  • In 2004 General Elections Mayawati won from Ambedkar Nagar constituency polled 3,25,019 votes against Shishlal Manjhi (SP).
  • In 2007 UP assembly polls, BSP in the leadership of Mayawati, defied all the predictions and won 206 seats to form a government of its own. Mayawati became CM for the fourth time.
