The meerkat is a small carnivore belonging to the mongoose family. It has a long slender body and limbs measuring 25-35 cm and a tail measuring 17-25 cm. The coat is usually fawn-coloured along with grey, tan or brown with a silver tint. They cannot see very well at close quarters; however, their long-range sight is excellent.
