Rishyamooka mountain was the place where Sugreeva, the monkey king, had taken shelter when his brother Vaali had attacked him and taken away his kingdom and his wife, Tara. He lived there with an army of monkeys and bears. Sugreeva was always alert to the danger of an attack by Vaali, though, under a curse by Matanga rishi, Vaali could not enter the forests of Rishyamooka. Sugreeva saw Rama and Lakshmana approaching the mountain and immediately asked his minister, Hanuman, to find out who they were and why they had come. They might have been sent by Vaali, he feared. Hanuman took the form of a brahmana and approached the two brothers. He carried out Sugreevva’s orders, asking them who they were and why they were there. Rama introduced himself and Lakshmana and Hanuman took his real form as he met his true Lord finally.
