Mellie’s Doll

Mellie’s parents gave her a beautiful doll on her birthday. The doll had lovely golden flecked eyes and chestnut brown hair. Mellie liked her so much that she carried her around everywhere. She called her ‘Greta’. All this gave Greta an idea that she was better than all the other toys.
There were a ragdoll, a toy mouse, a drummer, a clown and a teddy bear in Mellie’s room. She had been fond of all of them and played with them. But after Greta had come she never played with any of them. The ragdoll used to sleep with Mellie earlier. She was sad now because Mellie did not want her. The teddy bear went with Mellie all over the house, but now sat quietly on the shelf. The clown, the mouse and the drummer had so much fun when Mellie played with them. But they just sat doing nothing now.
At night, all the toys came alive. They would talk and play with one another. That night, when they all woke up, they talked about Greta.

“We want to love her, but she doesn’t play with us,” said the ragdoll.
“And Mellie doesn’t play with us either!” said the clown looking sad.
The mouse was thoughtful. Slowly he said, “Perhaps we need to go away for a while. If we are not here, she may miss us. Then we can return.”
“Hey! I think you are right,” said the teddy bear, “But where should we go?”
“I know!” said the drummer, “There is a little girl named Honey who lives with her grandmother at the end of this lane. They are very poor. Let us go to her.”
So, the toys got down from the shelf. On tiptoe, they crept out of the house and then went down the lane to the house where Honey lived. They went in through a window and sat in her room.
When Honey woke up, she had a wonderful surprise! She ran and told her grandmother. Granny came out to see who had brought them.

Mellie also had a surprise! All the toys were missing! She looked for them all over the house. Then she saw Honey’s grandmother. She ran to her and told her all about the missing toys. Granny took her inside to show her where they were!
Mellie saw the happiness on Honey’s face and said, “Oh, I’m so glad! They’ve come home! We can play together now, can’t we?” Granny smiled and agreed.
Now the toys had two little girls to love them!
