Meteora, meaning ‘middle of the sky’, is a group of huge monolithic pillars and hills. While the formation of Meteora began 60 million years ago, the establishment of the monasteries dates back to the 12th century. It is situated in Thessaly, Greece.
Why it is special: Meteora is known as one of the most precipitously built monasteries in the world. These monasteries are built high atop the vertical pills and steep hills that are made of natural sandstone rock. The monasteries were built as a sort of refuge for monks who were trying to escape the Turkish expansion into Greece.
