The Mezquita of Cordoba is a mosque cathedral, known by different names including the Great Mosque of Cordoba and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption. The Mezquita is located in Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain. This mosque-cathedral was built between 784 and 987.
Why it is special: The Mezquita Cathedral (The Great Mosque) was originally built as a small chapel, which was divided into two separate halves for the Muslims and the Christians in 711, when the Muslims conquered Spain. Soon after, the chapel was demolished to make a great mosque instead. However, by 1236, when Spain was once again under the Christian rule, the building was once again converted into a Roman Catholic Church, making way for a Renaissance Cathedral.
