Mr Alger bought the farm and settled in quite happily. But he needed someone to look after his two daughters: 7-year-old Susan and 3-year-old Maggie. And so one morning, Miss Fern arrived. She wore a grey suit, sensible shoes and glasses, and her hair was tied in a tight bun. “She seems very tough!” commented Goldie, the cat. But under the tough looks, Miss Fern had a gentle heart. She loved the children and taught them not only how to read and do sums, but also how to climb up trees and swim, feed the animals and tend to them. She could be heard singing in the kitchen as she cooked and baked. Farmer Alger was so charmed that he too fell in love with her! And on a bright Sunday morning, there was a wedding at the farm! And what a feast there was! There was so much happiness!
