Beebalm is a herbaceous perennial flower. The species with purple-green rosette buds show colour early in spring and grow into large red tubular flowers. Other varieties come in white and shades of pink, purple and blue. It is valued in ornamental plantings for its scarlet blooms that attract bees, hummingbirds and insects. Fresh flowers are used as a garnishing agent for green salads, fruit salads, cakes or preserves. The aromatic leaves serve as a substitute for mint and can be dried for tea. Dried leaves and flowers are also useful in sachets and potpourris.
