The Monument of Zalongo, commonly known as the Women of Zalongo, was built in Greece in 1961. The monument represents the women of Souli who had committed mass suicide with their children so as to escape the men of Turk Ali Pasha. The monument is 13 metres in height and is made of concrete and limestone. Standing on top of Mount Zalongo, the statue depicts 6 abstract female figures holding hands.
Amazing Fact: The monument is often referred to as the Dance of Zalongo because of the legend that the women jumped down a precipice one after another, singing and dancing.
