Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is considered the Atonement Day by the Sunni Muslims the world over, whereas the Shia Muslims deem it to be a day of great sorrow.
Do you know: While suffering and flailing rituals were banned in many places including Lebanon, these practices still continue in India and Bangladesh.
The day of Ashura in Muharram includes mourning rituals where the members of the community believe they must suffer by flailing themselves, cutting their bodies with knives, swords and chains with blades in them. The suffering is a sign of solidarity with Husayn and his family’s death in the tragic events at Karbala. The members mourn that they were not there to help Husayn’s family to fight beside them.
