Mukesh Ambani, a renowned Indian industrialist, is the current Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries. It is the largest private sector industry in India. According to Forbes, Ambani is amongst the most powerful people in the world and was mentioned in the “68 people who matter most” list. As of 2011, he is the 2nd richest person in Asia and the 19th richest man in the world.
Mukesh Ambani is the eldest son of the business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani who founded the Reliance group of Industries, Indias largest private sector and a Fortune 500 Company. He is also the brother of Anil Ambani who heads the Reliance Group. Mukesh Ambani is also a member of the Board of Directors for Bank of America Corporation. At present, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations. In India the Ambani family is listed as the richest family. Mukesh Ambani was born on 19th April 1957, at Aden (Yemen) to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben. He did his schooling in Abaay Morischa School and was a brilliant student. After graduating as a Chemical Engineering from the University of Mumbai, Department of Chemical Technology he went to Stanford Business School to pursue a Masters in Business Administration. However, he dropped out after his first year in order to assist in his father
s ongoing efforts to build the Patalganga Petrochemical Plant. Mukesh Ambani has two sisters, Dipti Salgaoncar and Nina Kothari
Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance in 1981. He took steps to spread the business in other spheres as well from textiles to polyester fibres and further into petrochemicals. It was under his direction that the worlds largest grassroots petroleum refinery at Jamnagar along with petrochemicals, power generation, port and related infrastructure was created. He has also set up the largest and the most sophisticated information technology network in the form of Reliance Infocomm Limited. However, Reliance Infocomm now is under ADAG (Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group) following the death of Dhirubhai Ambani and a split in the family business. Mukesh Ambani was ranked 42nd among the world
s most respected business leaders. He is the second among the four Indian CEOs featured in a survey conducted by Price Water House Coopers and published in Financial Times, London, in November 2004. He was awarded the World Communication Award for the Most Influential Person in Telecommunications in 2004 by Total Telecom in October, 2004. Mukesh Ambani was also bestowed the Asia Society Leadership Award by the Asia Society, Washington D.C., USA.
The king of the Reliance conglomerate is on the way for creating high-tech farms, new cities and an Indian spin on Wall Mart as he aims to revolutionize the most backward sectors (farming and retail) in the country. He is a member of the Board of directors of Bank of America Corporation and a present member of the International Advisory board of the Council on Foreign Relations. He also owns the Indian Premier League team, the Mumbai Indians. captained by Sachin Tendulkar.
Mukesh Ambani married Nita Ambani and has three children, Akash, Anant and Isha. They reside in a private 27-storey building in Mumbai named Antilia.
