One day, Mulla Nasruddin said to the Sultan, “Laws do not make people better. They must practise certain things to become attuned to inner truth.” The Sultan decided that he could make people practise truthfulness. So, he had gallows built at the city gates. The following day, a captain was stationed there with soldiers to examine all who entered. He announced, “Everyone will be questioned. If he speaks the truth, he will be allowed to enter. If he lies, he will be hanged.” Mulla was returning from another village. “Where are you going?” he was asked. “I am on my way to be hanged,” said Mulla. “We don’t believe you!” the captain said. “If I have told a lie, hang me!” challenged Mulla. “But if we hang you for lying, what you said will come true!” “That’s right! Now you know that everyone has his own truth!” said Mulla, and he entered the gates.
