One day, a peasant went to visit famous Mulla Nasruddin with a duck. Mulla, honoured by the offering, invited the man to dine and spend the night in his house. A few days later, the peasant’s wife and children visited Mulla and he treated them well, too. Eight days later, a whole family showed up and said, “We’re the neighbours of the man who gave you a duck.” Mulla was irritated, but he invited them all to the dining room. Soon, he appeared with a huge soup kettle full of hot water. He happily filled his guests’ bowls with this liquid. One of them asked, “What is this? We’ve never seen such a soup!” “This is the broth of the duck that I’m happy to offer to you, the neighbours of the man who gave me that damned bird,” Mulla calmly replied to the horrified people.
