Mundan is a custom followed by the Hindus. It is a custom when the child receives his first haircut.
Do you know: The Hindus believe that the baby’s birth hair has a connection with bad habits from his past life.
Mundan is usually performed on a child between the age of 1 and 3 years. The birth hair is shaved off completely, excepting a small tuft at the crown of the head, which is said to protect the brain. This custom is said to ensure a long life for the child and also protect him from the evil eye. A priest (pundit) is usually called to perform the ritual, after which the child’s head is washed with holy water.
