Naming after Death

Naming-after-Death

Re-naming the deceased is a Vietnamese custom.

Do you know: The Vietnamese believe it is unfortunate for the deceased to keep the same name as when he was alive.

When a person is about to die in Vietnam, the members of family gather around him/her. The eldest child bends to hear his last words and a moment of silence is observed. After this, the eldest member of the family suggests a name for the dying person. Men usually get the name Trung (faithfulness) or True (loyalty), while women are named Trinh (devotion) or Thuan (harmony).
