The needlefish has an elongated jaw and a slender body. It is silvery with a blue-green back having a single dorsal fin and a long narrow beak. The upper jaw grows fully only in adulthood. Juveniles have half beaks and feed on plankton. Adults feed on small fish, krill, crustaceans and small cephalopods. They reproduce through mating and laying eggs.
