NEWTON’S RELIGIOUS THOUGHTS AND BELIEFS

A person’s midlife reveals the mature mind and his confidence in dealing with personal and professional affairs. In the earlier part of his life a man commits mistakes and learns lessons which makes him an experienced person. A wise one has rightly said ‘The actual life begins at forty’. At this stage he learns to introspect and evaluate himself. After dealing with people he becomes a good judge of characters. His likes and dislikes, his thoughts, his beliefs and disbeliefs gain clarity and crystallized state. Philosophies of his life become well defined and if he is articulate he expresses them. He is no more afraid of disapproval of others because he can defend his point of view and stand as confusions now do not shadow his mind.

Adult age Newton turns to spiritualism

As already revealed Newton had faith in God and religion when he became a professor. He wanted to be a part of the Church practices. By 1690 Newton had begun to reveal his own religious feelings. Isaac Newton wrote several books on theology. He presented Bible with literary evaluation. Henry Moor supported the universal thinking of Newton and rejected the Carlesian Dualism. Then Newton wrote Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended—in which he corrected the prevailing disorder in chronology of ancient kingdoms. It should be remembered that ancient kingdoms used to be the vital part of religious evaluations. But this book saw the light of the day only after his death. Even while writing books related to religion he kept up his dedication to alchemy.

Contemplating over God and nature relationship

The three Newton’s laws of motion had been accepted by the scientific world as the three fundamental facts of physics and the law of gravitation had also been recognized at international level by the scientific community. He had become an internationally accepted scientist of exceptional inventiveness and the fame came to him rightfully. Yet later Newton related his researches to his religious beliefs. He reasons that laws of motion and gravity can’t be shown to work visibly and precisely as the mechanical parts of a clock work do according to their own laws. He said that the principles of motion and the law of gravity work in a way that should make us believe that some invisible force (God) existed universally under which all other principles and laws functioned. Some infinite divine force only could create cosmos and all the laws that governed it coming as secondary forces. The science only defines these secondary forces. So, credit for all the laws must finally go the Creator.
Thus, Isaac Newton tried to prove that all the factors, laws and principles that scientists research upon and define are the by-products of the creation of the cosmos by the God force.
Inspite of his great scientific discoveries Newton did not lose his head because who knew the basic fact that the earth, human beings, science and its findings were merely infinitely insignificant fragment of the infinitely big reality of universe. For the ordinary people that infinite reality was God that causes everything. Isaac Newton also recognized the existence of that mysterious reality that defied any comprehensive definition by any one. To understand the mystery Newton had read Bible in his boyhood and taken part in the activities of Church.

A contemplative Newton mulling over mysteries

Newton had criticized the beliefs or myths contained in the old scriptures related to the book called A Historical Account of Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture. Isaac Newton determined the day of the crucifixion of Christ to be April 33 AD, that was one of the beliefs of the old scripture. He had also tried to explain the salvation messages hidden in the Bible but this effort bore no fruit. Newton did not accept the Trilogy principle of the Church. He would not understand how the existence or power of God could be trifurcated. He finally believed that creator and provider was one divine entity, the Almighty or a Power Infinite. For him no human could be equated with Power Supreme in any way and any form. He did not like a man or messiah being glorified, deified and worshiped. Some people accused him of being a snob or of aristocratic mindset. It was more so when he was a member of the Royal Society. It may be a revelation to our readers to know the fact that Isaac Newton in his life time wrote more books on religion than science or mathematics. About the universe he believed it was created for some definite purpose and cause by Creator and his omnipresent or all pervading power was running the show. Everything that science was trying to define and understand was only within that infinite primary force, God element and subject to it. He thought as universe was created for a specific purpose the people should purposefully be a part of it.
