Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro-Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact caldera created out of a collapsed volcano. It is situated in Tanzania, Africa. It was formed almost 2.5 million years ago when the cone of an active volcano collapsed inwards after a major eruption.

Why it is special: The Ngorongoro Crater is also known popularly as the ‘Garden of Eden’. 259 sq.km in area with walls at a height of 600 metres, the crater is home to approximately 40,000 different species of birds and animals. A salt-water lake by the name of ‘Makat’ is situated at the centre of the Crater. It is believed that before its collapse, the volcano would have been taller than Mount Kilimanjaro making it one of the tallest mountains in the world.
