The nilgai has thin legs and a robust body that slopes down from the shoulder; males have distinctive white marks on the hooves. They are a known menace to crops; a herd can polish off entire fields in the Gangetic belts of Uttar Pradesh. The government has declared them vermin, and licences to kill them can be obtained.
