Noel’s pet cat, Nelly, was very naughty. She tore his socks, spilt milk, scratched the doors and dirtied the floor. But Noel’s mother loved and adored Nelly a lot. One Saturday, Noel’s mother baked some cookies and kept them in a jar. “Noel, I am going to the market,” she said before leaving. “Please take care of Nelly. Don’t let her eat any cookies.” Noel did not like that mother cared for Nelly. He planned a trick, ‘I will eat the cookies and blame it on Nelly. Mother will be angry with her then.’ As he reached for the cookie jar, Nelly sprang upon it. The jar fell open and she ate all the cookies. When Noel’s mother returned, she said, “Noel, I trusted you to take care of Nelly. She doesn’t know that the cookies are bad for her.” Noel was ashamed. He said, “I’m sorry, Mom. I will always take care of Nelly.” His mother was proud of him.
