The Apteryx mantelli (scientific name) or Northern brown kiwi is the most commonly found bird in the Northern parts of New Zealand. Found almost in all varieties of habitat along the Northern part of New Zealand, this bird is more heard than seen because of its nocturnal behaviour pattern.
16 inches in height, this bird has streaky red-brown plumage and is spiky. Its bill is long and pale and legs, toes and claws are dark and short. Their diet is comprised mostly of invertebrates. Monogamous breeders, an average clutch has 2 eggs which are incubated for 75-90 days by the male only. The North Island kiwi holds the world record for having the largest nest in proportion to its body. Its IUCN listing is ENDANGERED.
