Not for Horses

Becky, the milkmaid, was carrying a large wooden pail filled with fresh frothing milk. Victor, the horse, sniffed the fragrant milk and trotted out of the stable to follow her. Suddenly, Becky found his large soft muzzle at her shoulder. She balanced the pail while shooing him off. “This is not for horses, Victor!” she said sternly. But Victor kept trotting after her. Spilling some of the milk, Becky ran into the kitchen and told the cook about Victor, who was peering through the kitchen window. “Out!” said the cook, “Hay and oats for you! And I’ll give you some sugar. But milk is not for horses!” Victor went back looking sad. But the next day, he found the pail in the barn while Becky collected the eggs. Victor lapped up all the milk before she returned and stood innocently in the stable. Becky never left the pail in the stable after that day!
