Oliver Twist

Once upon a time in England, a young pregnant lady fainted on the street. She gave birth to a baby-boy and died. The baby’s name was Oliver Twist. Oliver was sent to an orphanage. He spent the first nine years of his life in this orphanage. He did all odd jobs there.
One day, Oliver was apprenticed to a local undertaker, Mr Sowerberry. The undertaker did not like Oliver. There was another boy, Noah, who helped the undertaker. Noah teased Oliver all the time. He kept saying bad things about Oliver’s dead mother.
‘I can’t take this any more. I have to run away!’ thought Oliver. So one day, he ran away at dawn and travelled towards London.
On his way to London, Oliver slept on the streets and drank water from the fountains to fill his empty stomach.
Oliver finally reached the city. There, a boy named Jack Dawkins met him. “Hey! It seems like you have nowhere to stay. Do you want to come with me?”
“Oh really! Thank you!” said Oliver gratefully.

Oliver went with him and realized that Jack worked in a gang of petty thieves and pickpockets. So, Oliver became a member of their gang. The head of pickpockets named Fagin taught Oliver how to steal. A few days later, Oliver went out with two other boys on a pickpocketing mission. Oliver looked around while others stole money from a gentleman. The boys tried to escape but the gentleman, named Mr Brownlow, caught Oliver.
Mr Brownlow was quite upset, but at the same time, he felt pity for little Oliver. He took Oliver to his home and took care of him as his own son. It was the first time Oliver felt happy in his life.
The pickpockets tried to find Oliver because they were afraid that the police might find out about their secret hideout from him. One day, Oliver went out to return Mr Brownlow’s books to the library. At that time, two pickpockets named Nancy and Bill caught Oliver.

Oliver was very sad as he was brought back to the pickpockets’ den. He thought, ‘Mr Brownlow will think that I am a bad boy. He will think that I have stolen his books!’
Later, Oliver was sent with Bill and others to steal again. They jumped over a wall. Oliver opened the window and was shot by the housekeeper who heard the sound. Bill and others left Oliver and ran away.
Oliver was bleeding helplessly. So, he was carried inside the house. The owner of the house, Mrs Maylie and her beautiful adopted niece Rose, took care of Oliver. They were very nice and kind. Even though Oliver had tried to steal from them yet they forgave him.

One day, Nancy met Mrs Maylie. She regretted what she had done and said, “A couple of days ago, a man named Monks met Fagin and told that he will give us money if we find Oliver. He is planning to kill Oliver.” Mrs Maylie decided to tell this to Mr Brownlow. Thereafter, Mr Brownlow and Rose met Nancy secretly. They told Nancy to get out of the pickpockets’ den and live with them. But she was nervous and returned to the den. While they were meeting, a member of Fagin’s gang had overheard their conversation. He rushed to inform Bill, with whom Nancy lived. Scared that he would be caught and Nancy had betrayed him, he decided to kill her. Two days later, Nancy was found dead.
Mr Brownlow managed to find Monks and took him to his house. “What is wrong with you? Why are you after Oliver?” he uttered.
“Why are you protecting him?” Monks retorted.

Mr Brownlow then revealed the whole truth about Oliver’s parentage. “Your father was my best friend. He was married to your mom, but eventually they broke up. After that, he loved a lady and she was Oliver’s mother. When Oliver’s mother was about to give birth to Oliver, your father couldn’t stay with her. He had to go to Rome for some urgent work. Then he felt sick, and I went to Rome to take care of him. But his sickness went from bad to worse. When he died, he asked me to take good care of Oliver and his mom. I tried to find her, but when I finally found her, she was already dead.”
Mr Brownlow looked at Monks and uttered, “You knew your father left a lot of money to Oliver. That’s why you tried to kill him!” Monks couldn’t say anything.

Mr Brownlow hugged Monks and said, “Your father loved you. However, he didn’t love your mother that much.” He told him that Oliver had been passing his days happily and peacefully. He told Monks to hand over Oliver’s share to Oliver.
Moreover, it was discovered that Rose was the sister of Oliver’s mom. Oliver and Rose hugged each other with the tears of joy. At that moment, Oliver’s loneliness melted away like the snow melting under the blazing sun. Oliver also accepted Monks as his brother. Monks had wanted to kill Oliver because of money, but now he regretted it.
Meanwhile, both Bill and the head of pickpockets Fagin were killed. Oliver and Monks lived together and Rose took care of them. Finally, Mr Brownlow adopted Oliver, and they along with the Maylie, retired to a blissful life in the countryside.
