On Indo Srilanka Accord

On 29th July 1987, Rajiv met with the president of Shrilanka Jayawardene. Both the leaders signed on an agreement. It was gurantee from India of the unity and the integrity and soverenguty, independence and security of Srilanka in return for an assurance from Srilankas that they would devewe meaning ful powers to the Tamils of Srilanka so that they feel that they are Srilankas and they are not an oppressed ethmie minerity. Now Srilanka hoped that the command agitation will be stopped which had been continuing since years. The Tamils were risiding in Srilanka since long. They are quite in good number. Due to this there wa communal agitation in Srilanka. Where riots broke, manly had lost their lives. Being frightened they started taking shelter in India. About 1-25 laes Tamils came to India. Due to this Srilanka had an enimity with India. Rajiv took great personal interest in Srilankan problem. He spent house in this issue. At last he wentto Srilanka and signed the agreemetn with president Jayawardene. Hence the harmony features the two countries was established by this agreement. Although after the agreement, there wa not totally peace in Srilanka. Then Rajiv sent Indan peace keeping force to help the Srilankan government. The force did his job efficiently and was sveessful in controlling the anarehial condition. This move by Rajiv was appreiated world-wide.
Saarc Sumit
In 1986-87, South Asia was comosed of mainly eight countries. These were India, Pakistan, Burma (now Myanmar), Srilanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan & Maldives. These countries organised an meeting in Bangalore and Kathmandu. This meeting resulted in possibilities of their self-relying economic development. At that time Burma was not the member of SAARC. Afghanistan also wanted to take the membership but there the conditions were not normal. She can only take it after it became normal. The SAARC countries were occupying an area of 44 lakh square kilometer and had a population of about 100 crore. If they adopt the policy of give & take/Trade, then they can achieve self-reliance in Asia and also in world. The big countries which were interbering in Indian subcontinent can be stopped by their united defence system. Rajiv under his leadership tried his best to solve the problems of Indian sub contant by showing the path to SAARCcountries can be established between them. Rajiv created a new atomospher in whole subcontinent. People stanted talking about SAARC spirit and this resolved many issues. Countries started coming closer to each other but they also had difference of opinion which sometimes resulted into their intarnal hatred. Due to this they usually bow to external forces. Hence South Asia become the centre of external force’s couspiracy and also tacked in economic condition. He economic progress also stopped. Under scuh circunstavees Rajiv under his foreign policies tred his best to build mutual cooperation with all countries. He with hisintelligence encouraged the programmes of SAARC and boosted it. This inseased the importance of India daya by day in abroad. In 1985, six natural countries had organised a meeting in Delhi. In meeting, it was discussed to band on the manufacture of nuclear weapons, because with its use, any country can be destroyed. On stickign to his policy, Rajiv said to America and Soviet Union that India can lend a hand to establish peace in the world. He said reacting towards powerful forces—
“We want to buy arms on reasmable prices form America and also want to have technical knowledge for maling arms, so that in near future, if necessary we can fight against pwerful forces.” At that time America was supplying arms and animation and technique of manufactureing atom bomb to Pakistan. On this Rajiv regreted and said— “India will once again think over its policis to manufactures nuclear weapons or not.”
When Festival of India was orgnainsed in America, Russia’s President Mikhail Gorbachav was present there. This cleared India’s first position among Asian countries and its dignity was contimously inereasing day by day in world.
