On the post of a clerk

Rammohan had an earnest desire to learn various languages spoken in different parts of India. In this way, he wanted the dream of modern India come true. To provide his motherland a higher status around the world Rammohan wanted to acquire various kinds of viewpoints. That is why, he chose the English culture because at that time it was considered more developed than the Indian culture.
In August 1805 Woodford resigned from his post. Rammohan also handed over his resignation to the government. Both now decided to leave Murshidabad. At that very moment, Rommohan got the news of his being appointed as the clerk in the revenue department by the government. A few days later, he was sent to Ramgarh. Here he worked under the supervision of John Dighy. Now he had a good chance to learn English because all the people in his office were very well versed in speaking English.
In 1809 Mr. Dighy was transferred to Rangpur. Rammohan also got ready to go with him. He was working under Dighy and also learning English. When Dighy heard Rammohan speaking fluent English, he started respecting him more than before. All the public letters coming to Dighy went through the hands of Rammohan. In debates also he used to speak in English. Rammohan had a keen interest in the politics of foreign countries. So he read the English newspapers very carefully. Unless he read the whole newspapers he did not engage himself in other activities. Through newspapers, he acquired the details of the political and economical scenario of European countries.
When Rammohan spoke English people used to gather in large members to listen to him. Eminent English officers used to praise him for his outstanding quality of speaking fluent English. Jeremi Benthem and James Silf Bakingham were among the admirers of Rammohan. Benthem was considered famous among the British philosophers, where as Bakingham was the editor of Calcutta Journal. Once Bakingham sent a note to an editor of a London Journal which said—
‘‘I am highly surprised that Rammohan’s style of speaking English is superb. I have never seen any Indian speaking such fluent English. The Britishers should keep in mind those words which he uses in his speeches. I may surely say that Rammohan can deliver very effective speeches in English language as compared to others.’’
