Common name : Onion aphid
Scientific name : Neotoxoptera formosana
Family : Aphididae
Native to : East and South-East Asia
Interesting fact : Unlike most insects, the onion aphid does not alternate beyond host plants, but rather spends its entire life on one onion plant either on the bulb or the leaves.
Hardly 2.3 mm in length, the onion aphid is reddish-brown to black in colour. Its diet consists solely of the onion plant and is thus considered a huge pest in agricultural areas. The population of the onion aphids can grow at a very rapid pace.
