This herbivorous, somewhat rabbit-like animal, has an agouti-coloured fur with a light-coloured underside, buff-coloured, thin legs and a grey top-line. It has long ears and limbs. Its hind limbs are longer and more muscular than its forelimbs. The mara has a head and body length of 69-75 cm with a tail of 4-5 cm. It weighs 8-16 kg.
