Common name : Pear midge
Scientific name : Contarinia pyrivora
Family : Cecidomyiidae
Native to : Worldwide distribution
Interesting fact : The larvae of this insect are deposited inside the pear fruit where they feed, hence the name ‘pear midge’.
The adult fly emerges from its cocoon in spring. Its diet is comprised of the pear fruit as a larva. The female lays eggs inside the pear blossom before it opens. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae keep feeding on the fruit from within until the fruit is completely destroyed and falls to the ground, where the larva enters the soil and pupate within a cocoon until it emerges as an adult.
