Peony is a deciduous, woody shrub. It is a taprooted plant with thick horizontal rhizome and leafy stems. The leaves have elong-ateovate or elongate-elliptical lobes with greyish wax and short sparse hair beneath. Its flowers are large and single. They are often bright crimson, sometimes pink. The light pink‑rose petals of the large, semi-double flowers almost obscure the bushy centre clump of yellow stamens. Large rosy pink flowers with trembling golden thread-like anthers give way to three-horned fruits. The flowers bloom in early spring. The fruits then open to reveal red and purple blue seeds.
