Lieutenant Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett was born on 18th August 1867 in Torquay, United Kingdom, and he died on 29th May 1925 (aged 58 years) in Mato Grosso, Brazil. An artillery officer, archaeologist and explorer, Percy is best known for exploring South America when he was trying to look for the lost city of El Dorado in the jungles of Brazil. His first ever expedition to South America was to map the jungle area between Brazil and Bolivia for the Royal Geographical Society. He made seven expeditions between the years 1906 and 1924. On his last expedition, he set out with his eldest son and his friend to find the lost city which he called ‘Z’.
