“So you see,” said Damanaka, “Only if you fool the master will he think that we have served him cleverly.” The jackals, therefore, went to Hefty. Karataka sat under a tree at a distance and Damanaka went up to him and said, “I am the keeper of this forest, sir. That is the General of the King of the forest, a mighty lion. You must come and pay your respects to the General and do as he orders.” Hefty went up to Karataka and bowed to him. Karataka said, “You have to come and bow humbly to the King of the forest if you wish to stay here. But we must first go to the King and tell him that we are going to present you to him. So, wait till we return for you.” Hefty waited patiently while the jackals went to tell the King.
