The Porcellariiformes (scientific name) is an order of birds in which the petrel exists. The petrel is mostly found on the open seas of the Southern Hemisphere. It is pelagic and comes to land only to breed. Depending on the species, its size can vary from 7-16 inches. Plumage colouration is in shades of white, brown, grey and black. The tubular nasal passage is a unique feature, which helps it smell its prey on the open sea. The diet is comprised of fish, squid, krill and marine plankton for most species. Colonial breeders, most species create nests on small predator’s free islands. The average clutch-size is only 1 egg incubated anywhere between 45-60 days. Most species are either ENDAN-GERED or NEAR THREATENED.
