The Awá tribe of Brazil is known to take in orphaned animals in the rainforest.
Do you know: The Awá tribe live and hunt in the rainforest using 6-foot tall bows and gather forest produce for their food.
The Awá tribe, which is fast becoming endangered because of killings and encroachment on its land, has known a simple way of life. A unique custom in this tribe is to adopt orphaned animals and keep them as pets. They share their hammock-like beds with coatis, share mangoes with parakeets, and the Awá women may even breastfeed orphaned capuchin and howler monkeys.
