Polar lands are the areas of the Earth that surround the North and the South Pole. These are the frigid zones of the Earth where the temperature remains way below 0°C throughout the year. The polar region surrounding the North Pole is called the Arctic. It includes the Arctic Ocean and northern areas of Europe, Asia and North America. The word ‘Arctic’ is derived from a Greek word arktos which means ‘a bear’. The name signifies the location of a specific constellation, the Ursa Minor above the North Pole. The region surrounding the South Pole is called the Antarctic. It includes the continent of Antarctica and a few parts of the surrounding Southern Ocean. The word ‘anti’ means the opposite of the Arctic.
