Pompeii

The city of Pompeii is an ancient Roman town that was situated in Campania, Italy, founded in the 6th or 7th century BC. The entire town of Pompeii was destroyed and buried under 4-6 metres of volcanic ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted 160 years after the town was established. Pompeii comprised an amphitheatre, port, gymnasium and a complex water system.

Amazing Fact: Lost for almost 1,500 years, when the town was rediscovered, the details of everyday life, including houses and frescoes, were perfectly preserved.
