Poppy and Dozer

Poppy’s mother often found her sitting up at night. She would read or play games or watch TV. She couldn’t sleep. It was very difficult, because the next morning Poppy would fall asleep in the class! No matter what Poppy’s mother tried, it didn’t seem to work.
One night, a strong wind blew and it entered the house through a window that had been left open. It brought in a lot of dust and sand particles too. Poppy shut her eyes to avoid getting the grit in her eyes. But a small bit of it got in. She washed her eyes but it was difficult to keep them open.
So, she lay down on her bed with her eyes shut tight. Suddenly, a fat man carrying a large sack stood in front of her.
“You can’t sleep, Poppy?” he asked.

“How do you know my name?” asked Poppy, still with her eyes shut, “Who are you?”
“I’m Dozer, the Sleep Man, my dear. Even if you don’t open your eyes, you can see me,” he replied.
“Why have you come here?” asked Poppy.
“I’ve heard that you sleep in the class. That’s not a good thing!” said Dozer sternly.
“But what can I do? I can’t sleep at night!” said Poppy, very upset, “Every day, I get into trouble in school for sleeping at will”
Dozer pulled a large clock out of his bag. “I’ll give you this. At nine thirty every night, it will sing a song. And immediately you will fall asleep wherever you are. Make sure you are in bed. See you later,” he said and vanished.
Poppy thought it was all a joke, but there was a large clock definitely in her room. The next day, she forgot that the clock would sing. She awoke in the morning to find that she had gone to sleep on the kitchen floor! For a few days, this carried on, as she found herself waking up in the bath-tub or under the dining table and even on the door-mat!

Dozer came on Saturday evening after a storm again.
“Didn’t you believe me?” he asked.
“Yes, I do. I’ve been sleeping at all kinds of odd places. Today I’ll be in bed by nine thirty, I promise!” said Poppy.
Now her mother was surprised because, sharp at nine thirty, Poppy was in bed and within minutes she was asleep! Mother hadn’t seen Dozer and his magic dust!
