The original Potala Palace was constructed in 637 in Lhasa, Tibet. Named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the Potala Palace was the Chief Residence of the Dalai Lama, until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959. This 13-storey building, with more than a 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and 2,00,000 statues is now a museum.
Amazing Fact: The Potala Palace is the highest palace in the world. It stands at a height of more than 3,500 metres above the sea level.
