Quarrelling Quails

There was a hunter who was very good at hunting quails because he could imitate their cry perfectly. Any quail that heard it would believe that another quail was in trouble and fall into the hunter’s trap.
King Quail saw this and decided to tell all the other quails to beware of the hunter. He also told them about a plan to escape if they were trapped by the hunter. “If he throws a net over us, we must take off together, carrying the net with us. Then we drop it on a thorny bush. He will be so busy taking his net out of the thorns, that we will be able to get away,” he explained.
All the quails agreed and every time the hunter caught them in his net, the plan worked to help them escape. The disappointed hunter often returned home without a single quail. This caused his wife to fly into a temper. She screamed at him for days, and continued to grumble for a long time. She would not listen to anything the hunter said, trying to explain his problem.

The hunter was worried. But looking at his wife’s behaviour, he realized that sooner or later if the quails quarrelled, then he would surely be able to catch some of them. So, he waited and watched.
One day, one of the quails who had been caught in the hunter’s net, happened to step on another quail and a quarrel broke out between the two. They forgot that they were still caught in the net. They just got busy fighting and calling each other names.
When King Quail saw this, he signalled to the others who were free that they should leave the place immediately, before the hunter came. The quails who were free took flight, while the foolish ones who were quarrelling were caught by the hunter.

King Quail and his companions landed in a safe place in the forest. Safely away from the hunter, he turned to the others and said, “You see, my friends; what comes of fighting with one another? We are free because we remained united. The moment those two quarrelled, the hunter took advantage of the fight to capture them.” The quails had become wiser and knew the value of unity. Fighting with one another was really not a sensible way to live.
