You will need:
- Large bowl
- Small toy (to be used as
the victim) - Jug of water
- Large box of cornstarch
Understand the scary composition of quicksand and why it is so tricky to get out of it once someone has fallen in.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Take a large bowl and add about a quarter of the cornstarch from the box to half a cup of water into the bowl.
- Mix it well with your hands. Gradually keep adding cornstarch and little water until the mixture becomes like honey.
- The entire box of cornstarch and about 2 cups of water will be utilized.
- Your quicksand is ready.
- Try a few experiments with it. Move your hands through the mixture slowly at first and then quickly.
- Next try sinking your hand to the bottom of the bowl and then try getting it out.
- Place a small toy into the ‘quicksand’ and watch it sink. Try getting out.
RESULT
Quicksand is nothing else but a mixture of sand and water, which usually occurs when water floods an area which is filled with sand. Then one gets trapped there. It is both solid and liquid at the same time, making it very difficult to move through it. In fact, the more a person or animal thrashes around to try and escape, the faster he or it sinks.
